Pint of Science - Three Day Festival!

Local PhD students are bringing you Pint of Science 2024!

Pint of Science is back for another exciting festival! This is an opportunity to hear from scientists about their research from the comfort of a pub, café or community space. Researchers from the University of Warwick and Coventry University are leaving their lab coats behind for an evening of presentations, activities, and conversations with the community.

Check out the events happening across Coventry and Warwickshire below!

  • Unlocking Potential: From Math Anxieties to Multilingual Dramas (The Twisted Barrel, Coventry)

We'll take a step back to access, is how we educate our kids productive, or are we jeopardising their futures. We will investigate why the word Pythagoras makes you shiver with Prof. Sue Johnston-Wilder and how to address these feelings of anxiety around maths. While Jenna Nilson will discuss with us compelling evidence to show how using drama helps to nurture language development.

Technology and Beyond (The Graduate, Dirty Duck, University of Warwick Campus)

Can AI help refugees? What can space signals teach us? And how can maths predict the future? Technology may be improving faster than we can keep up, but it holds the key to solving so many global issues! Join us for friendly discussions and interactive workshops on the 13th of May at the dirty duck, to explore technology and beyond!

  • Journeys of Discovery: From Lab Coats to Life Stories (The Twisted Barrel, Coventry)

Humans have been creating and telling stories for millennia - from the epics of Ancient Greece to the poetry of Keats and everything in between. Beyond what we may traditionally consider a story, however, both the scientific research process and our own identities can also be considered a story. Indeed, in this night of presentations, it is these unusual stories that will be under the microscope!

From Our Lives to Our Minds (1 Mill Street, Leamington)

Join us for a fascinating night of Pint of Science where you can enjoy talks from our daily lives to our minds. We’ll have a linguistic researcher exploring the charm of building an intercultural language lifeworld, and a psychologist probing into our collecting behaviour with various mouthwash appeal. We’ll also have break games and prizes waiting for you!

Healthy Food, Healthy Body (The Graduate, Dirty Duck, University of Warwick Campus)

Put your hands up if you’ve heard of ‘an Apple a day keeps the doctor away’! Well, apples certainly didn’t manage to stop Covid… Indeed, people talk about health and are eager to stay healthy all the time. But how? How to make ‘correct’ choices in buying food? What’s the out-of-sight food production like? Step in tonight and walk out with better understanding on what your body wants you to know!

  • The Science of Everyday Life (The Twisted Barrel, Coventry)

Join us for a night of discovery! Dive into the ethical dilemma of using prize draws in research, the secrets behind mysterious phone calls, and the role of sleep in adolescent well-being. Our talks bridge science and daily life, offering insights for everyone. A night not to miss for those curious about the science shaping our lives. Please note some of the discussions at this event will contain sensitive content. Further detail on talk topics is available on the Pint of Science website.

Global Health (The Graduate, Dirty Duck, University of Warwick Campus)

Imagine an evening where curiosity meets challenge: discover the secrets of health science. We prepared a thrilling exploration into the mystery world of diseases, uncovering how scientists fight against diarrhoea in Pakistan, outwit the elusive sandflies, and track the stealthy herpesviruses that threatens chickens. Please immerse yourself in a seamless journey of talks, quizzes and activities!

Tickets for Pint of Science cost £5 and can be booked below via the Pint of Science website. Events are organised by University of Warwick PhD students and shared by Resonate.
