Reflecting on Pint of Science 2023

On the 22nd, 23rd and 24th May 2023 we hosted six Pint of Science events across Coventry and Warwickshire.

Pint of Science is a grassroots, non-profit organisation that aims to bring researchers and the public together to be curious and chat about science research in relaxed, informal environments. The first Pint of Science Festival took place in three cities in 2013 and, this year, saw 500 cities across the world taking part. Here at Resonate, we’re lucky enough to plan and host the Pint of Science events that take place in Coventry and Warwickshire.

This year, we held six talks across three days at three local venues. Seventeen members of staff and students from the University of Warwick and Coventry University gave talks and started new discussions. We welcomed over 200 members of the public across the three days. Number of pints consumed is unknown!

In Coventry, we held three of our events at the Twisted Barrel Brewery in Fargo Village. Holding our events in an active Brewery was incredibly exciting and the home-brewed ales seemed to go down a treat with our audiences! On Monday, we discussed ‘The Future is Digital’ with PhD student Fraser Birks (@fabscience on TikTok), Dr. Martine J. Barons (@DrBarons) and Dr Alan Richards. Tuesday evening saw Dr. Georgiana Mihut (@GeorgianaMihut) and Dr. Amrita Kulka (@AmritaKulka) give talks about ‘Equal Opportunity’. On Wednesday, we found out if ‘Chemistry is the Solution’ with PhD student Katerina Archavli, PhD Candidate Joe Gregory and Dr Alex Baker (@AB_wan_Kenobi).

Over in Leamington Spa, we held two events at 1 Mill Street. On Monday, we had important conversations about ‘Reproductive Health’ with Dr. Joanne Muter, Dr. Thomas Rawlings (@Tomrawlings), Dr Cerys Currie and PhD student Aleksandra Byrska. We then uncovered ‘What’s in the Water?’ on Tuesday night with Dr Kim Summers, PhD student Dan Zaradzas (@KaradzasDaniel) and Dr Sarah Duxbury.

We held one further Coventry event at Warwick Arts Centre on the University of Warwick Campus. Two wonderful PhD students, Yanyan Li (@YYanL887) and Will Gildea (@will_gildea), gave talks about ‘Understanding Relationships’.

What a week we had!

We want to say a big thank you to the staff and students who gave talks, our generous volunteers, the three venues for hosting us and the wonderful audiences who came along.

Bring on Pint of Science 2024!
