National Youth Theatre: The Ancestors

  • Warwick Arts Centre Coventry, England, CV4 7AJ United Kingdom (map)

Free film showing and pre-film introduction

The Ancestors is a filmed performance of a National Youth Theatre site-specific play by Lakesha Arie-Angelo. It addresses issues of slavery and revolution at Portchester Castle, a prisoner-of-war camp in Hampshire for Black revolutionaries from the Caribbean held there as prisoners of war in the 1790s.

A pre-film introduction by Professor Kate Astbury, one of the academics whose research inspired the play, will give an insight into the creative process of taking archival material as the basis for a powerful new work of theatre about freedom and race.

Recommended age: 13+

Content warning: This production explores themes of racism, enslaved people and includes gun fire
