Science on the Hill - Rising Stars in Biomedical Research

  • Interdisciplinary Biomedical Research Building Coventry, England, CV4 7AJ United Kingdom (map)

Science on the Hill returns to explore more exciting research!

Join the team from Warwick Medical School and the School of Life Sciences for four fascinating talks, presented by rising stars in the world of Biomedical research:

  • How Physics Shapes the Brain - Dr Eva Kreysing
For about a century, scientists have believed that the brain develops through biochemical signalling. Only recently have we begun to find clues that the mechanical stiffness of the brain plays a similar role. In fact, physics can switch on the biochemical signals we already knew about. This work shows how brain stiffness instructs synapse formation, a key step in wiring the brain, and the foundation for learning and memory.

  • Bacteriophages - the Enemy of My Enemy - Dr Branko Rihtman
Viruses that can infect bacteria, known as Bacteriophages, have long been of interest and can be used in applications from agriculture and industry, to diagnostics and medical therapies. This talk will explore the history of phage research, the most important discoveries that we’ve made over the last 100 years, and the current uses of phages across different fields.

  • Cracking the Code of the World’s Most Neglected Diseases - Dr Amber Barton
Bacterial infections are a significant challenge worldwide, and many of them are still not widely researched or fully understood. This talk will discuss how the field of genomics has not only improved our understanding of some of these infections, but also helped to inform new ways to combat outbreaks.

  • Shining a Light on the Heart: from Cells to Patient Care - Dr Christopher O'Shea
Every heartbeat relies on electrical signals passing between heart cells, but when these signals are disrupted, they can cause dangerous abnormal rhythms. This talk will show how we use light, computer models, and other techniques to study this often-hidden activity and understand what happens in heart disease. It will share how working alongside clinicians at University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire helps to connect our discoveries with the challenges faced by patients, with the aim of developing better ways to diagnose and treat abnormal heart rhythms.

Doors open at 5:30pm and light refreshments will be provided. Talks begin at 6:00pm.

Please note the recommended age for this event is 14+ and all under-18s must be accompanied by an adult.
