Behind the Scenes with Science Technicians

  • The Tin Music and Arts Coventry, CV1 4LY United Kingdom (map)

Uncover the day-to-day workings of a lab from the people who are there everyday

Lab technicians spend most of their days in the lab, supporting, enabling and making incredible scientific discoveries. At this event, we’ll hear from technicians themselves to find out what they get up to and what they’ve uncovered.

Take a sneak peak at the line-up:

  • Materials all around us absorb light, but what do they do with this newfound energy? Using lasers to act as cameras we can track what happens following absorption. We can then use this information to design new materials that can harness the power of the solar spectrum to solve current issues such as light harvesting and new sunscreens.

Dr Jack Woolley is Platform Manager of Research Technology Platforms.

  • How do you look at things that are too small for a normal microscope? By using electron beams instead of light we can look at even smaller things. Hear about viruses, nanoparticles, the insides of cells, molecular machines, really thin slices and equipment that hates to be switched off.

Dr Saskia Bakker is a Research Technology Platform Manager in the School of Life Sciences.

  • Materials Engineering is an important area of science which combines fundamental science with engineering problems. This presentation will delve into the micro-scale work of engineering and show how microscopy techniques can help us solve real-world engineering problems.

Tom Moore is an Engineering Technician at WMG.

Tickets are free but registration is required, and will include one drinks voucher and light refreshments.

Doors and refreshments from 6:30pm, event start time 7:00pm.

This event is aimed at those 18+ but those aged 14+ are welcome to attend with an accompanying adult.

This event is part of the Resonate Festival of Science and Technology 2024.
