Encounters

  • 1 Mill Street 1 Mill Street Leamington Spa, England, CV31 1ES United Kingdom (map)

This event is curated by University of Warwick postgraduate student Luke Robert Mason and promoted by Resonate.

Encounters unites visionary thinkers through the art of conversation.

Join us in Leamington Spa for a curated series of four concise conversations between a University of Warwick academic and guests. These dialogues will delve into the latest cutting-edge theories, demystify profound concepts, and spotlight ground-breaking insights.

For attendees this event is a unique opportunity to connect with others who share a passion for intellectual exploration as we join four fascinating conversations:

Do Universities Need to Exist? - Prof. Steve Fuller in Conversation with Luke Robert Mason
How do we recover what made universities revolutionary institutions? This conversation will explore how we can return to the enlightenment mission of the university - as a place that encourages free expression, and the translation and publicity of new forms of knowledge.

The Camera & You - Hannah Ayres in Conversation with Paola Medina-Gonzalez
How has our relationship to the camera changed in the age of new technology? Artificial intelligence, digital filters, and voice changers can impact upon the way we understand ourselves through the lens. Drawing on themes from their podcast 'Theoryish', this discussion will use feminism, art history, and visual sociology to help unpack the question: is aura dead?

Panpsychism: Are Objects Conscious? - Dr. John Pickering in Conversation with Prof. Thomas Hills
Explore the radical idea that consciousness is ubiquitous and exists at scales beyond the range of human experience. This conversation will introduce the philosophical idea that consciousness is not reducible to neuropsychology and much less to physics.

Why Design? - Adela Glyn-Davies in Conversation with Dr. Robert O’Toole
What can design teach us about the world around us? So much of our everyday lives has been meticulously designed, but we often forget the impact this has. This conversation highlights the importance of design thinking to improving our reality.

Tickets are free but registration is required. This event will be recorded.

This event is recommended for ages 16+.

Doors from 6.00pm, event start time 6.30pm.
