Invisible Worlds - Humans and the Supernatural

  • Canley Community Centre CV4 8FT (map)

Folklore and supernatural stories told in an extraordinary shadow puppet show

A unique performance centred around historical beliefs about the supernatural that retells extraordinary stories of otherworldly encounters through the captivating medium of shadow puppetry.

Centring around four stories from England, Wales and Scotland that date from the late 17th to the early 19th centuries, discover tales of demonic assaults, and intimate relationships between humans and fairies. Meet a shapeshifting witch, a blacksmith with a dark secret and a ghostly warrior bound to his troublesome kinfolk…

The event aims to explore human nature in past and present. How might our ancestors be affected by the invisible world of spirits? How did stories of the supernatural reflect on the powers and vulnerabilities of a human body? And how much has changed today? Each story will be followed by expert historical commentary, and there will be time at the end for thoughts or questions.

Age 11+ (under 16s to be accompanied by an adult) - sexual references.

Invisible Worlds has been commissioned by Coventry UK City of Culture 2021 and the University of Warwick.
